Boys Clothing Can be Fashionable Too

By Katie Wilber

Early in the 20th century little boys were dressed up just as much as little girls were. Believe it or not, in the early 1900's it was not uncommon to find baby boys in dresses. They were wearing silk and lace, along with a sailor outfit here and there. Somewhere in the middle of the century, boys clothing got less formal and just plain bleak.

Mothers-to-be have commonly been heard saying, "I want a little girl so I can dress her up. Dressing boys is no fun." Who could blame them? For a long time it seemed as though the clothes available for baby boys and little boys were pretty much limited to t-shirts, jeans, and baseball caps.

Boys aren't wearing dresses anymore, but there are more options available to them now than there has been in more than 50 years. It used to be that boys clothing was made of simple fabrics and very limited color choices. Finding something with style was very difficult.

Now boys can be just as fashionable as girls. In general, kids are becoming independent thinkers very early on. Designers have taken notice and jumped on the bandwagon. They are no longer just focusing on young girls. Designers are now giving boys the option to have their own unique style. Original, quirky, colorful clothes are not just for young girls anymore.

Regular department stores like Target and Sears aren't the only ones paying attention. Boutique designers like Sweet Potatoes and Knuckleheads are taking notice of the need to make boys clothing more fashionable. Long gone are the days when shopping for a boy was no fun.

If there's a mini rock-and-roller in your family, there should be no issue finding him clothing that fits with his interests and personality. It's very common to walk into any department store and find rock star and graphic t-shirts for young boys. A stroll through the boy's jean section will lead to up-to-date jeans that rival the style and selection of the young girl's choices.

There was a time when athletes were the only ones sporting jerseys, and only out on the field. Today, walking around in athletic gear is stylish. Kids don't even have to play on a team to get away with it. All they need to do is hit any store and they'll find sports inspired t-shirts, hoodies, and even less casual polo shirts. Whether they want something generic or something inspired by their favorite sports team, the local shopping mall will have something to please any sports fan. Another popular trend is sports inspired newborn clothing.

Not only has fashionable clothing become popular for boys, but now they also have shoes and accessories available to them.

Department stores, chain shoe stores and online stores are also carrying a large range of fashionable shoes. Whether your boy likes casual shoes, boots and skating (skateboarding) shoes, there should be no shortage of styles and companies to pick from at the local mall or on the Internet.

Whether your boy's style is cargo pants, athletic wear, rocker t-shirts, or sweaters, he has just about as many choices as a girl the same age as him has. He may still want to wear his t-shirts, jeans, and baseball caps, but he has options available now. - 15634
