Self-Empowerment Tips for Women: Finding Your Inner Power Source

By Deanna Collins

When people are working towards achieving goals and amibitions, even when times are tough they may turn in many different directions to get some form of support. However, the most successful people are able to achieve their amibitions with the power and strength they find with their inner resources.

Many women already have the skills necessary to become an empowered woman, and are well on their way to having their goals and needs accomplished; personally, for their families or even their community. This self-empowerment depends on what skills women can learn. It's possible that you already have these skills and only need to work on their development.

The Elements of Empowerment

Empowerment has many facets. It can be economic, political or social. Many women seek to empower themselves as a matter of personal development. Empowerment helps women find in themselves the resources to overcome setbacks and adversity. It's a process that feeds on itself. Being pro-active improves self-esteem and effectiveness which in turn boosts confidence and self-image and earns respect from others.

Disempowered people are most often finding themselves marginalized by a variety of forces seemingly beyond their control-whether in the family, workplace or in the community. No matter what the particular situation may be, what becomes fundamental is individual empowerment. Any situation of group empowerment relies heavily upon each individual having developed their own positive outlook, motivation and skill in order to proceed with the steps able to make a difference.

Women Taking Steps towards Empowering Themselves

Though much has been done to address gender discrimination, women remain more likely to find themselves disempowered in a variety of situations, especially in the family and in the workplace. The solution is clear: women need to seek out, build and claim power. The method for achieving a particular goal may require much thought and work, but personal empowerment is the place to start.

By recognizing self-potential women can take on more, as well as bigger problems. There is proof of this seen in many marginalized communities in African, as well as other under-developed countries around the world where you can find women's initiatives empowering not only individuals, but in fact entire communities.

Strategies for Attaining Empowerment

Education: Education is a very powerful way for women to find their ability to discover new and better ways to reach the achievement of their goals. With the power of knowledge within reach, as well as knowing the different options available for the achievement of these tasks we wish to accomplish, learning is essential in making the best possible decisions.

Make positive choices: Education can provide the analytical skills necessary to decision-making and the evaluation of different risks. When you hold a good knowledge base of available choices you have, confident decisions are easier to make.

Positive thinking and attitude: A defeatist or pessimistic attitude can destroy motivation and stop people from even starting to try to improve their lives and circumstances. Numerous psychological studies have shown that patterns of negative thinking can be altered with cognitive therapies. A simple gratitude journal can help maintain a positive attitude.

Building Self-esteem and confidence: Initiative is a matter of creative thinking, knowledge and confidence. With education and some manner of keeping track of achievements, no matter how small they may seem, you can be provided with a positive boost of confidence, foster initiative as well as improve your self esteem.

Interpersonal/communication skills: Many things in life require persuasion and co-operation with others. Good communication skills help move things forward.

By developing their skills and awareness, individually or collectively, women can empower themselves in order to realize their potential, with benefits for themselves and their loved ones. - 15634
