Best Grilling Tools

By Natasha Johnson

That sun's been getting hotter every day, and you've probably been eyeing your outdoor grill, thinking about the steaks and burgers you'll be feasting on as the weather warms. Now's a great time to prepare for the grilling season by stocking up on some grilling essentials.

1. Basting brushes. Marinated meats and vegetables are great when grilled, and basting brushes come in particularly handy for brushing on additional marinades and glazes while grilling.

2. Wire grill baskets. These usually come hinged, and with long handles that allow you to flip the basket easily. Grill baskets are great for grilling any foods that tend to flake while cooking, or have small pieces that could slip through onto the fire.

3. Skewers. Skewers are perfect for making kabobs, and you can go with either disposable bamboo ones, or more heavy duty ones. The metal ones will make larger holes in your food, and you need to be careful when turning them. Bamboo skewers need to be soaked for about half an hour before grilling.

4. Meat thermometer. This is one gadget that is perfect for grilling steaks, especially for people who like their beef rare or medium rare. It's also a good idea to have one on hand when grilling chicken - you'll have a perfectly grilled chicken without having to cut into it to make sure it's thoroughly cooked.

5. Tongs. Long-handled tongs are an essential tool for grilling, and if you've only ever relied on a spatula or a long-handled fork in the past, you'll find flipping food so much easier with tongs. - 15634
