Thanksgiving is a time of food. Hard work in a new world led to success and to this celebration. Every year it's a traditional meal. Turkey, sometimes ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls or bread, pumpkin pie and apple pie, and a variety of other trimmings adorn the holiday table. It's a time when families get together to celebrate history. The food may be similar, but Thanksgiving dinner recipes have as much variety as the colors of the leaves on the November trees.
Doesn't this appetizer sound delicious? It's a pretty simple Pumpkin soup. Butter and oil simmer over a medium heat. Saute the white part of the leeks in this until they're soft. Next, add together one tablespoofull of ground cinnamon, teaspoon of ground ginger, a little bit of cloves, approximately 15 ounces of pumkin puree, and last but not least a pinch of salt. Stir it well and after it's all mixed, add 32 ounces of vegetable broth. Stir in one quarter cup of brown sugar. Simmer for 1 minutes over low heat. Once in the bowl some cream or half and half and another pinch of cinnamon can be added. That soup is a real treat.
Fried turkey is also good. You may think it's greasy but it isn't. The oil is so hot it doesn't flow into the meat. For this task a big oil pot and propane burner are used. Turkey fryers can be found in stores like Walmart. You'll need two thermometers, one for the meat and one for the oil. Make sure to fry outside in a clear area. The oil must be between 325F and 35F. Cook it for 3 minutes per pound, until the breast is 17F. Frying a turkey doesn't involve cooking the stuffing inside the bird, but it does include spices directly injected into it.
For some other soup ideas try curried pumpkin apple soup, butternut squash soup, or pumpkin and sausage soup. Other appetizer possibilities also exist. Try something different like cheese wrapped asparagus. Use two cheeses, one spread and one sliced. A blue cheese spread over slices of swiss can be good. Spread the soft cheese on the slices, wrap it around a few asparagus spears, then cook in a 23 degree C oven for about 15 minutes, or until the asparagus is soft.
The asparagus prepared this way loses its health appeal. Thanksgiving is a time for a little fun. So live it up. - 15634
