Making a Wig

By Marquetta Breslin

Wig making is an ancient art that requires practice and skill to master. Wigs come in many forms and styles to match every person's individual needs. Making your own wig can be much more beneficial than going to a store and purchasing one, because you can custom-make the wig to fit your head, or someone else's head, perfectly.

There are several different kinds of wigs. The most commonly-bought wig from a store is a basic wig made from human or synthetic hair. Basic wigs aren't normally made by hand, and normally don't have the highest quality of hair. Wigs can also take the form of a toupee (a small wig that covers only the top portion of the head), a hair piece, or a lace wig.

When it comes to wigs, the creme of the crop is the Lace Wig System. This wig is not only made out of the finest quality of hair, but takes the longest to produce. It also has the most natural looking results. To make a lace wig, strands of hair are individually attached to a fine piece of lace in the ventilation process. The result is an appearance that the hair on the wig is your natural hair.

There are several products that you need to start making a wig. The first thing you will need is a mannequin head to complete the wig on. A mannequin head can be made of wood, Styrofoam, or a number of other materials. You'll also need a wig cap, or lace, to serve as the base of your wig. A wig cap is higher quality than the netted cap you'll find on store-bought wigs, and of course, lace is the highest-quality base.

You will also need good quality hair to create your wig. Human hair is preferred because of its natural appearance, but high quality synthetic hair will yield close to the same results. Also, synthetic hair is not affected by heat or humidity, so it is known to hold its style better than natural, human hair.

You will also need additional tools, depending on the type of wig you are making. Most of these tools can be purchased at your local beauty supply store or online through a number of reputable distributors.

Considering making (and wearing) your first wig? Check out these facts:

1. If your wig is made of synthetic hair, it will hold its style better in heat and humidity than human hair will. Although, human hair looks more natural.

2. Use only products made especially for wigs on your new wig. Using normal shampoos, conditioners, and styling products will weaken the quality of your wig.

3. Wearing a wig can leave the top of your head feeling hot and sweaty. To avoid this, apply a little bit of cornstarch-based baby powder.

4. Suffering from hair poking out from under your wig? Tuck all your hair in a wig cap before applying the wig.

5. Sometimes, wigs will be too large in some places, causing the wig not to fit tightly. If this happens to you, try using a small piece of wig tape on those areas. - 15634
