You may not know this, but Jean-Claude Van Damme is making a come-back. He's just starred in a movie that is garnering serious acclaim on the movie festival circuit. That's right. I'm talking about Jean-Claude Van Damme.
For the very young or very new action move fans: Jean-Claude Van Damme is a muscular, handsome, world-famous action hero that started training in martial arts at age 11. He retired from his active competition with an 18-1 (18 knockouts) record to pursue a movie career.
Just as a side note: He had a rematch with Patrick Teugels, the only man that he loss to, before he left competition. The rematch was halted under the 2-minute mark because Van Dame was so aggressive that it was too much for Teugels.
Muscular and handsome, Van Damme has an impressive physique and in nearly every Van Damme film, he usually executes a masterful split. The characters he portrays are usually softer than the typical invincible or unrefined action hero that Schwarzenegger or Stallone portrays. He never managed to achieve blockbuster status in America in his prime, yet he has been in almost 40 movies and has unchallenged worldwide appeal.
His new film, appropriately titled JCVD, is garnering real attention on the festival circuit. Van Damme plays a character not far distant from his real life persona. More than just a comedy, the movie promises to give us real depth of character.
And apparently, JCVD himself manages to give a stellar performance. Again, I know that you're surprised, but apparently, the star of such cinematic wonders as Cyborg and Universal Soldier has had some unused talents.
The trailer for the film, located at www.apple.com/trailers/independent/jcvd/, reveals a really nice look to it. Most of the color has been taken from the frame. And the editing and music choices evoke a late 60's/early 70's grooviness.
The movie also looks really funny. There's a great joke at the beginning of the trailer, where an out of breath Van Damme cries to his young Asian director, 'I'm 47 years-old and it's very hard for me to do everything in one shot.'
The down-on-his-luck actor finds himself in a bank heist. Of course, we're hoping that this situation will necessitate the use of his famous acrobatic moves. It's looking like a film of butt-kicking, middle aged angst, and pop culture satire. It seems too good to be true. - 15634
