Wicked London owns the UK

By Matt Ryan

Wicked, the musical that enjoyed such success in the U.S., has finally gone international. Wicked debuted overseas in London, UK on September 27, 2006. It is called Wicked London, as the show was altered slightly for its British audience. According to audience response, the changes have done nothing but enhance this production. Most tours of this production are changed at least slightly for its various audiences. Examples of the changes made to London's show include special effects, choreography and some minor dialogue changes. Audiences rave about this show which has done nothing but break box office records since it arrived overseas.

Wicked London began its London run at The Apollo Victoria Theatre, and has not left since. The show does not appear to be in any danger of losing it's home. The Apollo Victoria Theatre has so thoroughly embraced its successful and famous show, that there are actually pink and green cocktails offered for audience members to drink. Further, there are pink and green hand soaps and hand lotions in the restrooms. And as if all of that was not already enough, the entire Apollo Victoria Theatre has been decorated in green.

What makes Wicked "London"

Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz are so yesterday. Everyone knows what happened to Dorothy and her little dog. Wicked London jazzes up this original story by telling the untold story of the other characters of the famous tale. There's always another side to the story. L. Frank Baum originally published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900. It's now time to take a visit to the Land of Oz and see what happened before Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch.

Wicked London is based on the highly successful novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch by Gregory Maguire, along with characters created by L. Frank Baum from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked London explains the relationship between the Wicked witch of the West and Glinda, the Good Witch. Previously it was unknown that they had both shared a past and a friendship. The music for this fabulous production was composed by the award-winning Stephen Schwartz.

In Wicked London, the green character Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West) is currently played by Alexia Khadime, who most recently played 'Nala' in Disney's The Lion King. The blonde, popular Glinda is played by Dianne Pilkington. The girls met at sorcery school and have their share of misunderstandings and differences. Their friendship takes their lives on different paths and extraordinary adventures. The story follows one good witch and one 'wicked' witch. It's fun to watch and entertaining.

The Fans keep coming and coming and coming

Tickets for Wicked London are currently selling through September 26, 2009. Wicked London just celebrated its second birthday and has been breaking records since its debut. To date, the Wicked London production has grossed 55 million pounds, and has been enjoyed by over 1.5 million people.

By all indications, Wicked London is an absolute mandatory stop on anyone's tour of London. The UK's The Independent has described Wicked London as the West End production's "most successful musical." Further, audiences describe this production as absolutely spellbinding. They call Wicked London imaginative, and a remarkable, unforgettable show. Wicket London appeals to all audiences, regardless of ages and backgrounds. Whether you are native to London, or come from very, very far away, you must make your best effort to see Wicked London. It is guaranteed to be the show of a lifetime, to entertain, and to delight. Even stars like Tim Burton and Geri Halliwell have made time to see Wicked London.
