Become A Telecommunications/Computer Network Engineer

By Steve Smith

A telecommunications network engineer in general is a professional who designs, installs and maintains telecommunications and computer networks. This is not an entirely technical role as the Network Engineer will ideally have an understanding of business processes to ensure any design offered is appropriate to the operation of the business. The network infrastructure must enable the business to meet its goals and ensure long term productivity. If the network infrastructure is underspecified it can bring a business to a standstill.

Generally most of the network engineers grip an engineering or a degree in technical such as telecommunications or computer sciences. With these degrees some of them may also have an alternate certification by starting an apprenticeship scheme or by the Cisco, juniper, HP or other companies related to network engineering. Now a day there are many generic training package which have been started and are of great significance as they provide the practical aspects of Network Engineering. The Building Industry Consultancy Services International (BICSI) has offered many training courses, exams and also on job training and development schemes. These are the programme which will lend the companies and the older students who are looking for change in job.

The Open Systems Interconnections is used by all the network engineers, the seven layers in the architecture is the tool which will help in network designing and troubleshooting. This is the most useful tool provided for the education of Network engineers. The division of the functions of two devices into seven layers is done by the usage of this architecture. Example the bottom layer of the architecture is the physical layer. This layer includes the cables and connectors which physically connect together any two devices. The next layer is the Data Link Layer which safely delivers the data through the physical layer. Layer three establishes, maintains, ans clears the connections across the network and is called as the Network layer. The common protocol in network layer is IP.

The rest of the layers are transport layer commonly known as TCP Transport Layer Protocol, session layer, presentation layer and the application layer. It is vital to know all the seven layers of the architecture and the prominence should be given to the first four layers. The running ans the termination of a copper or optical fibre cables, or wireless links and to configure the link and routing the protocols efficiently and effectively are the identifications of a good network engineer. They must also be good in providing the network security and guarantee their customer's data and telecommunications links are safe from hackers, viruses and malware attacks.

A network engineer will originate from structure cable installers, network administrators and ex military personnel. A network engineer must be specialized as a network Architect, Wireless Specialist and security expert. The remuneration will depend upon the level of experience but to tell the average pay it can be between $500,000/- to $80,000/-. a good net work engineer may get an opportunity to travel across al over the world and will be in great demand when it is needed to troubleshoot serious problems and redesign the failing networks in the business operations which are a risky and complex task. - 15634
