Alcoholism and Drug Addiction - Preconceptions that Can Hurt You

By C-P Lehmann

I have mentioned this often previously - before healing or progress can be made when fighting an illness like drug addiction or alcoholism, is knowing and understanding what you're up against.

Because knowledge leads to understanding - and once you understand what addiction is really about - you can get out of your own way and make progress on finding a way out.

Being inflexible and having preconceived notions on a particular area (in this case alcoholism or drug addiction) - means we end up being our worst enemies in our fight against addiction.

So the first thing you need to do - is get out of your own way - and empower yourself with the knowledge and information you need to begin your journey of recovery and ultimately starting a new life for yourself.

Too many of us have a need to be right, rather than just staying open-minded to a subject. In certain cases there is nothing wrong with that - but when you're dealing with issues as important as alcoholism and drug addiction - there is no place for egos.

A particularly controversial subject around understanding drug addiction and alcoholism is the argument over whether or not they can in fact be regarded as a disease. In the bigger scheme of things, not agreeing with the addiction or alcoholism as a disease argument, shouldn't prevent you from doing everything you can to beat an addiction - whether your own or someone you love.

Agreeing on the causes of alcoholism and addiction can also sometimes be a contentious issue. Science now shows that genetics plays an increasingly prominent role, but lots of people still don't believe it despite evidence to the contrary.

If you would like to read more detailed information around any of these issues, don't hesitate to visit my website by following the links provided. But remember, ultimately the most important thing is to do whatever is necessary to beat your (or someone you care about) alcoholism or drug addiction. - 15634
